Welcome to RE:SOUND, the 8th International Conference on the Histories of Media Arts 2019 - Aalborg, Denmark. RE:SOUND is part of the Media Arts Histories conference series, bringing together leading researchers, artists, and scientists on a series of interdisciplinary topics for over 14 years.

The RE:SOUND conference will take a specific interest on the theories, practices, histories, etc., of art and technology which are focusing on, concerned with, reflecting on, including, mobilising and/or working with sound as a main component or an integral part. RE:SOUND will host four days with 10 tracks of paper sessions, panels, workshops, practice-based interventions, exhibitions, performances, poster sessions, a PhD workshop and keynotes.

Jan Thoben is a Berlin based musicologist and art historian. He studied at Humboldt University, Berlin and became a research fellow at Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute in Linz in 2009/10. During this period, he co-edited the print and online compendium “See This Sound”, an interdisciplinary survey of audiovisual culture. Since 2013 he has lectured at universities and art academies in the UK and Germany. From 2015-2017 he worked as teaching assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig. Thoben currently works as research assistant at the Art Academy in Mainz and as program coordinator for the master's program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts. He has published on John Cage, Alvin Lucier as well as early 20th century media arts practices and is currently preparing a transdisciplinary reader on video theories together with Prof. Dieter Daniels, which will be published in spring 2020 by Bloomsbury Academic as part of their International Texts in Critical Media Aesthetics series. Thoben is also part of the experimental electronics duo 60Hz exploring the interface of analog video- and sound-synthesis. In 2017 he joined the Ever Present Orchestra dedicated to the performance of Alvin Lucier’s instrumental compositions.
