Pia van Gelder is a researcher and artist, a PhD candidate at the University of New South Wales. Her thesis investigates the influence of esotericism on instruments in the arts of the 20th century. During her candidature, van Gelder has been a Visiting Student Researcher at Stanford, and a Visiting Graduate Researcher at UCLA. In Sydney, she is a part of the Sound, Energies and Environments research cluster in the school of Art & Design with Professor Douglas Kahn and Dr Caleb Kelly. Her recent paper “Bodies and Energy, Circuits and Sound: Rethinking and Listening to Leon Ernest Eeman’s Relaxation Circuit with A Bio-Synthesizer” was published in the Journal Of Sonic Studies, Issue 16 in 2018. Her work has been exhibited internationally and nationally at private and public galleries. In June, her work will be exhibited at the Black Mountain College Museum in Ashville USA.
